On Aug. 21, not long after the clock strikes 10 a.m. on the central Oregon Coast, the moon will completely blot out the sun, briefly turning day into night and warmth into coolness, touching off the biggest celestial spectacle the nation has seen in nearly a century.
It’s been nearly 40 years since a total eclipse has “visited” the United States, and this one will take about 90 minutes to cross the country before ending its journey at the South Carolina coast. And ponder this: The next solar eclipse to cross Oregon won’t occur until June 25, 2169, an event for the future generation to behold.
By some estimates, a million visitors will be visiting the state of Oregon to gaze up at the total solar eclipse and watch in wonderment as the moon’s shadow makes landfall before sweeping across Oregon in 12 minutes at more than 3,000 miles an hour. The city of Portland won't experience 100% totality, there will be a 95% coverage of the sun.
While state agencies are gearing up for heavy traffic and busy tourism, we'll be hosting a special meditation workshop here in Portland to celebrate and honor this unique meteorological and celestial event in a contemplative and psychic way.
Join us for guided meditation and a discussion on the historical and psychic implications of solar eclipses. We will meet at the school and then go outside to an empty lot nearby where we'll be able to sit and soak up the splendor of this event and witness it with our own eyes - including our third. :)
Participation is limited to 10 people. Special eclipse viewing devices will be provided. You are welcome to bring your own outdoor fold-able chair, or borrow one of ours.
